I have this bike listed for $150.00 but don't be afraid to make me an offer. All I will do if it is a price I can't sell for is tell you sorry "No can do" with no hard feelings. I do this as a hobby and for the fun of it. My son and I but love bikes. We do this together and you can call or email either one of us. My son, Jason knows more about most bikes than I do. Great Pics!! This really shows what this bike is all about!!
ReplyDeleteI FOUND a Schwinn World Tourist, 5 speed, in the alley behind my home. I recognized that it was a classic. I thought it was my neighbor's old bike perhaps given to her daughter. When it was left out as evening came – and they weren't home – I took it into my yard so that it would not be stolen. It looked like it was in pretty good condition. As I rolled it into my yard I realized that the wheels (I think original) rubbed. They are both bent out of shape.
ReplyDeleteThe next day my neighbor had no idea what I was talking about. I posted neighborhood ads to no response. I stuck it in the basement where it sat for 3 months. I moved, took the bike with me, stuck it in a closet while I got settled so I could get to it when I could get to it. A friend told me that he thinks someone stole it, did wheelies on it, bent the tires and left it. Makes sense.
The bike is a little gunky dirty in the gears. But except for a little stiffness in the gears it SEEMS OK. From what I have read online everything is original. It is the bronze like red and probably from the early to mid 80s. The wheels are bent and the tires old but otherwise is appears to be a well-taken care of bike for its age. Oh, the rear reflector is broken (Is this a special reflector . . . it is like the reflector on your bike.).
Since I am a middle age woman, and not a bike fanatic, I would consider this my bike for running errands. There is a rack over the rear tire. I could buy saddle bags. It is perfect for marketing in my island community. I would not worry about this Schwinn getting stolen . . . I think??? Who in this day and age of bikes that weight 3 ounces with 28 million gears would want this old Schwinn? Now checking on line I discover they almost have a cult following!
I will have to take the bike to a bike shop. I only know how to fix dishwashers, my computer and basic electrical stuff so this is WAY beyond my abilities. I envision it with taken with parts sitting in baths of gunk cleaning stuff. Can you guess as to what this bike may need? I suspect a tune-up?? How much should I invest to bring this bike up to speed?
The reputable shop I asked about it, has not seen it, seemed to think it should be a trade-in. I already said "NO". This was a charming find and I do not want to buy another bike since I already have one. Or rather, now I have two.
Thanks for you suggestions and advice.
